Nationals opportunities:

Tech Challenge
Tech Challenge—the chance for techies to show their stuff. Any troupe, several troupes, or chapter may register a team for Tech Challenge. Each team must have five to seven team members. Each team will participate in challenges at five different stations. The stations could include knot tyinglight focus, prop shift, costume change, sound execution, button sewing, or stage management. Tech Challenge allows team members to demonstrate their abilities to meet challenges encountered in a production environment. Skills in accuracy, speed, and efficiency will be evaluated.
Additional discretionary points may be awarded (or subtracted) by the judges for creativity, ingenuity, teamwork, etc. Tech Challenge rules may be found at thespianfestival.org/techchallenge. The top two Tech Challenge teams will serve as
the running crew for the 2013 National Individual Events Showcase (NIES).
The 2013 Tech Challenge will accommodate up to 30 teams in a five-hour period. The first 30 teams
to submit the application and payment will be selected to participate.

Thespian Playworks
Thespian Playworks is a playwriting program and script development workshop for high school writers. Beginning October 1, participants may submit scripts for review by the Thespian Playworks staff. Up to four plays will be chosen for workshop readings and development at Thespian Festival 2013. Please encourage your students to participate and read these submission guidelines carefully.

Eligibility
Participants must be active members of the Thespian Society enrolled in high school during the 2012-13 school year. Important: if your script is selected as a finalist, you must be available to attend Thespian Festival 2013, which runs from June 24–29 at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Finalists will be responsible for the cost of their travel to Festival. Their registration fees, which include room and board and admission to all Festival events, will be paid by the Thespian Society.

Script Guidelines
The play can be about any subject. It must be the original work of a single individual. No collaborative works or adaptations from other media will be considered. Musicals cannot be considered, nor can plays that include copyrighted music, song lyrics, or poetry by someone other than the submitting playwright. Plays should have a running time of about thirty minutes or less (approximately thirty typed pages). You may, if you wish, submit more than one play.

Send to:
Thespian Playworks
2343 Auburn Avenue
Cincinnati, OH 45219-2815

Submission Procedures Playscripts must be typed (12-point type preferred), securely fastened, and submitted as hard copy by the author.
      • Submit two clean, good quality photocopies of your script. Copies should be single-sided. (Keep the original; submissions won’t be returned.)
      • On the cover page of each copy, type the following information: the title of your play; your name, address, telephone number, and e-mail address; your Thespian troupe number; the name of your school; the name and telephone number of your troupe director; and the words “Thespian Playworks Submission.”
      • Include a standard business envelope, addressed to yourself, with a first-class stamp on it.
      • All participants will be contacted after the script review process is completed, around April 15.
      • Submissions will not be acknowledged at the time of receipt and will not be returned.

Deadline
Thespian Playworks submissions must be postmarked by February 1, 2013. Early submissions are encouraged. Playwrights whose scripts are selected to be workshopped at the Thespian Festival will be notified shortly after April 15.

Workshops
Up to four playwrights will be chosen to participate in play development workshops and script-in-hand readings at Thespian Festival 2013. The playwright and actors will collaborate with a director and dramaturg; the emphasis will be on
bringing the play to life on stage with minimal production elements, and on strengthening the script through rewrites. The student playwrights will be part of the production team, as they observe the readings, consult with their dramaturgs, receive and provide feedback, and work on revisions. The process will culminate in readings of the scripts, or portions of them, before a Thespian Festival audience, followed by an audience talkback.

Rights
Your work is protected by copyright from the moment it is created. As the writer, you own the play and have exclusive control of the rights to produce, publish, and adapt it. By submitting your script to the Thespian Playworks program, you are agreeing to allow the International Thespian Society, at its discretion, to mount a staged reading of your play. The Society may also, at its discretion, choose to publish one or more of the finalist scripts, or portions of them, in Dramatics magazine, and compensate the author with contributor’s copies. All other rights remain the exclusive property of the playwright.

Thespian Musicalworks
Musicalworks is a program designed to promote original musical writing by high school Thespians. It also gives student lyricists and composers the chance to workshop their creation with working professionals and student musical theatre actors.
Beginning October 1, participants may submit the opening number to an original student-written musical for review by the Musicalworks staff. One or two opening numbers will be chosen for workshops and a performance at the 2013
Thespian Festival in Lincoln, Nebraska. Please read these submission guidelines carefully before submitting your original musical composition.

Eligibility
Participants must be active members of the Thespian Society who are enrolled in high school during the 2012-13 school year. Important: if your piece is selected as a finalist, you must be available to attend the 2013 Thespian Festival, which runs from June 24-29 at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. Finalists will be responsible for the cost of their travel to the festival. Their registration fees, which include room and board and admission to all festival events, will be paid by the Thespian Society.

Musical Guidelines
The musical can be about any subject. Student writers should submit only the opening number from their original musical, not the entire score. The opening number should be between 3 and 6 minutes in length. Students may produce this work alone or with another student writing partner; maximum of two, no group submissions will be considered. Cast of characters needed to stage the musical number should not exceed 15 people. Musical tracks submitted should have full lyrics and accompaniment either by instruments or a composition program such as Garage Band. No a capella pieces will be considered. Students may also include any dialogue that occurs before or during the opening number. You may, if you wish, submit more than one opening number provided they are for different original musicals.

Submission Procedures
Please send submission via email to ThespianMusicalworks@gmail.com. Your submission should consist of the mp4 file of your opening number, a one-page plot summary of the entire show including information about the musical’s intended audience, a lyrics sheet for the opening number, and a cover page. The cover page must include the following information: the title of your musical; your name, address, telephone number(s), and e-mail address; your Thespian troupe number; the name of your school; the name and telephone number of your troupe director; and the words “Musicalworks Submission.”

All participants will be contacted after the script review process is completed, around April 15. Submissions will not be acknowledged at the time of receipt and will not be returned.

Deadline
Musicalworks submissions must be emailed no later than February 1, 2013. Early submissions are encouraged. Composers/lyricists whose compositions are selected to be workshopped at the Thespian Festival will be notified shortly after April 15.

Workshops and performance
Once a musical is selected, the student writer will work with a director/choreographer, music director, and Musicalworks coordinator to cast their musical via an online audition process. Student musical theatre actors are invited to audition in the spring of 2013 to perform in this new musical workshop at the Thespian Festival in June.  Workshop sessions during the week of festival will be used to learn the music and stage the number for a performance in front of the whole delegation during the NIES showcase on Saturday morning at Festival.

Requirements
All work submitted to the Musicalworks program must be original. No copyrighted materials (songs, lyrics, poetry) will be accepted.

Rights
Your work is protected by copyright from the moment it is created. As the writer, you own the musical and have exclusive control of the rights to produce, publish, and adapt it. By submitting your opening number to the Musicalworks program,
you are agreeing to allow the International Thespian Society, at its discretion, to mount a performance of your work. The Society may also, at its discretion, choose to publish the finalist music, or portions of it, in Dramatics magazine and Schooltheatre.org. All other rights remain the exclusive property of the composer(s).
