Hey folks! So for those of you who don't know me my name is Spencer Mackey and I'm a Senior orchestra major! I am your Orchestra rep, and also the rep for all the other majors who don't have reps. I am really excited to be involved in thespians this year. Thespians has always been one of those things that you see signs for and then you're like, "Oh that's just for Theatre majors." But that's the awesome thing about Thespians is that it's NOT just for theatre majors. It gives kids in other majors (like myself) to get some awesome immersion in theatre that we wouldn't be able to get otherwise.

DSA is really incredible, and I think it provides so many of us with such a great concentration in our art form, but I also feel like it really hinders our ability to explore other art forms because of these silly stigmas regarding our "majors." Ok, so what if you're not a vocal major, go try out for Vocal Jazz. And just because you're not really a writer doesn't mean you shouldn't try the creative writing elective. I think it's because we go to school with such talented kids that we are afraid to experiment in new art forms, because we feel like we're going to be inadequate by comparison. So I really feel that my goal for this year, especially as a rep for multiple majors, is to try and get more majors involved in thespians. Last year I auditioned for the all school musical with ZERO expectation of anything, and sure enough I got cast! I feel like so many kids at DSA have a talent for acting and just don't know how to show it because they're afraid or worried.

On another note: I have seen two shows (Medea and One Acts) in the past week and was EXTREMELY impressed by both of them. First off, Medea was absolutely stellar. Those were some of the coolest effects I've ever seen used on a stage. I think the chorus was one of the coolest aspects of the show. I'm sure they felt a little ridiculous at first walking around in unison, chanting, whilst moving their hands around, but it really made for a mesmerizing effect. Also, I want to give a HUGE shout out to both Lauren Donahue and Jalen Taylor. You guys were incredible, and you both had such excellent interpretations of the role. Also, today I luckily got to see Marlo Berberian's One Act, Trash, which was really cool. I thought it was cast perfectly (nice job Andie and Maggie) and I was really impressed by the actual trash you used for the set. So for those of you who have time to go see any of the Senior-directed one acts, I highly suggest taking the time to.

This is my first blog, so I'm not really sure how long I'm supposed to blather on about things. I don't wanna keep you guys too long, so GO FORTH AND LIVE MY FELLOW THESPIANS.

Best of evenings to all,
Spencer Mackey
