Oh wait. EVERY month is named after Thespis.
Hello children. Also, hello to any odd non-child browsing this site (that means YOU, Brett Scott!)
Things be happenin. Eurydice was fantastic. Rivals is goin on. Int class plays. EGP. Almost senior project time. Seniors are doing college auditions. It's crazy.
This blog post will serve three purposes.
1: it's mandatory. Although...Samie and I seem to be the only ones doing them...so...
2: I will give out my first ever THESPIAN OF THE MONTH (TOTM) award!
3: For anybody wondering, I will give a detailed account of my CalArts audition (it was saturday) to help prepare anybody who might be auditioning for colleges in the near future (That means YOU, Brett Scott!)
First, my prestigious monthly award goes to ...(drumroll please) DONOVAN FOUNTAIN! Donovan represented the crap out of DSA at ThesCon, first with an awesome pantomime with David (did they ever find out how they did?), then by WINNING THE THESPIAN SCHOLARSHIP. This is a huge deal. Past DSA winners include Nora Garrett, Brittany Vicars, and Jake Brasch (with Tucker Worley and Josh Brown both bringing in a second place scholarship). DocFoun got to perform on the Wells Fargo Stage for three thousand screaming Thespians. Then, he started the second semester by giving a simply brilliant performance in Eurydice. The whole cast was great, but this was, quite simply put, the best work I've ever seen Donovan do. So, good sir, because of your Thespian merit and your dedication to Allison Watrous, I SALUTE YOU!
So. CalArts. Here's what went down
12:45 Arrived at Campus. Filled out forms. Pretty basic information, but with two on-the-spot essay questions: what is one theatre experience that has shaped you, and why do you want to pursue theatre. I answered both.
1 Shuffled into a lobby area with all other applicants, parents who came along. Sat down. Given a speech on what the school is, and what they try to do. (Short version--"Discover what the theatre of tomorrow will look like")
2 All applicants (no parents) shuffled to downstairs warmup room for waiting. Allowed to warm up however needed. I chose to stretch. One kid walked in very small circles.
2:47 brought out into hall, led into audition room. Panel was three judges: young, nice, african American woman; older, nice, caucasian woman; spanish sounding nice man with a very resonant voice. They asked for my two monologues (they ask you to prepare two contrasting 2 min mons, one being shakespeare. They ask as well to prepare one more piece just in case. My first two were Brilliant Traces and Two Gents. My backup was Everything Will Be Different) So, i performed my two monologues. They asked if i had another shakespeare. Although i hadn't prepped another, i had a few from the monologue unit. I asked what kind :) they said dramatic, so i went to my Hamlet. They had me kneel on the floor with my arms stretched out, my head tilted up, and my eyes closed. They said "don't try to make the words make sense. Just let them come from inside you. Speak very slowly, and very quietly." It was pretty cool. This was followed by a short interview. We discussed "why CalArts", dance training (i said i didn't have much, they told me "good"), stage combat, trapeze, Scotland, Billy, playwrighting, directing, experimental theatre, and more. It was really cool, and seemed to go very well. CalArts is a really cool school.
If you have any further questions, feel free to find me and ask me. (Brett Scott...not you...)
Peace. See you in Feb!
