Hey heyyy It's Nicki, your VP
Hope everyone is enjoying their summer!
I wanted to blog briefly about some shows I saw this summer in NYC.
Too Much Light Makes The Baby Go Blind
TML was brilliant as always. Having seen it in March, and performed our own, it was interesting to go back and see it again with this new perspective on the process. I don't think there was a single play that was the same as when we saw it in March, which was very exciting-- it was an entirely new show!
Clybourne Park
Clybourne Park was one of my favorite shows that we saw. It was about how race, history, and culture effect real estate, and while that sounds a bit boring, it was actually really interesting! It was funny, dramatic, though provoking-- everything we are taught to look for in theatre. I strongly recommend to anyone who has the chance to see it.
Once
Once was a beautiful example of how award winning theatre has evolved. It doesn't have to have an overly extravagant set or massive orchestra or anything of that sort. Once had an onstage orchestra that was incorporated into the play, and was fairly minimalistic in terms of changing scenery. Another show I would recommend to anyone who gets the chance to go.
Tribes
Tribes is an off-off Broadway show, but by far my favorite of the 7 shows I got to see in New York. It was in an intimate theatre, set in the round, and the writing and direction were both brilliant. Every time I think about this play my mind starts racing. It is about a deaf man living with his family and how his opinions change as he meets more people in the deaf community. Seriously one of my favorite pieces of theatre that I've ever seen. If you are in New York you absolutely must must must must see it.
Other shows I saw were:
Harvey
Porgy and Bess
Peter and the Star Catcher
All of which I loved and would recommend!
Hope everyone is seeing lots of art this summer! See you in a few weeks!
