Hey Thespians! President Samie here,
If you're new this year and have no idea what we were talking about at the meeting, here is a list of terms that may be helpful!
~Sate: Means State Thespian Convention, we go in december. It starts Thursday night, and continues over Friday and Saturday. We stay two nights at a hotel downtown and attend the convention during the day. The convention is at the convention center downtown--the place with the big blue bear! You can take workshops, which are one hour masterclasses ranging in topics from musical theatre dance to playwriting to costume design to everything else you could imagine. We see a show each night that has been selected to perform at State and you can take an IE.
~IE: Stands for Individual Event. It can be a duet scene, group scene, solo musical number, duet musical number, group musical number, or pantomime. Or you can compete with costume design, publicity design, etc. You can also submit a movie or join an improv frenzy team. The specifics are in the handbook on the homepage of this site. Basically with an IE you are competing to go to nationals. You have a time scheduled to perform in front of a panel of judges and they rank your IE on a scale from good to superior. If you get two or three superiors on your IE, you qualify for nationals. You may take up to two IEs to state and they cannot be in the same category (For example you could do a solo musical and a group scene but you could not do two duet scenes, etc.) It is NOT required that you take an IE if you want to go to state. You can register just to go to state if you do not care to take an IE.
~Nationals: Is a larger scale version of state. It is a whole week in the lovely town of Lincoln, Nebraska. You stay in the dorms and the University of Nebraska for a week and take workshops, watch 10 main stage shows (which were selected from all across the country to perform.) perform your IE if you qualified, or if you're a junior you can audition for colleges.
~Middle School Theatre Day: Is a fundraiser that we put on every year. Basically, we replicate a day of state convention for middle schoolers and we, the high schoolers teach the workshop classes. We offer clowning classes, dialect classes, dance classes, etc. It's lots of fun and we need you to participate and invite kids to come.
~Cabaret: We hold these in the black box in the spring and fall. You can audition with really just about anything. We've had people do original songs, original dances, miscast scenes, raps, and all sorts of other stuff. We hold auditions during lunch a few weeks before and then post a list of the acts selected to perform and then you just get onstage and perform your heart out at the cabarets. They're a really relaxed and fun way to put your performance skills out there.
~Inductions: If you are new to Thespians, you will need to be inducted. We will host them at school this year, we provide an italian dinner and give you a nice certificate and read some official stuff and induct you into the troupe! It's awesome.
Alright. That is the majority of all the terms we toss around. If you have any more questions feel free to email me at samie.a.johnson@gmail.com
